True Detective is one of the most successful and critically acclaimed TV show from HBO in the recent years. In fact, its first season broke many records and won numerous awards. But, did you know that its creator, Nic Pizzolatto wanted it to be a novel when he began to write it. It was only later that he realized that it would make a much better TV series. He created True Detective to be a multi-part series. Each season of the show features a fresh story, new cast, and a completely different pursuit altogether.
The first season of the show features Matthew McConaughey in the lead role of Detective Rust. Rust’s partner is Martin, who is played by Woody Harrelson. Nic wanted McConaughey to play the role of Martin initially. Then, after reading the script, McConaughey was convinced that he would be better at playing the role of Rust. He was also the one who proposed the name of Harrelson for the role of Martin. McConaughey and Harrelson are good friends in real life and their performance together in the first season of the show was naturally nothing short of extraordinary.
The season two of True Detective featured Colin Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, and Taylor Kitsch in the lead roles of three police officers belonging to different police departments. Another main character was that of Vince Vaughn, who played the role of a gangster. Since the second season was a self-contained story, separate from the first, the McConaughey Harrelson duo did not return as actors. However, they did continue as executive producers of the second season. Even the director of the first season, Fukunaga, could not return as the director, but stayed as an executive producer for the show. The second season was directed by Justin Lin, Nic Pizzolatto, and Scott Lasser.
Mathew McConaughey bagged two awards - a TCA Award and a Critics’ Choice Television Award, and won numerous nominations for his performance in the first season of the show. Woody Harrelson too was nominated for a number of awards. While Nic won the Writers Guild of America Award, Fukunaga won the Primetime Emmy Award. In fact, the first season received universal acclaim and went on to win and get nominated for a host of awards, including the Golden Globe Awards.
Nic has signed a three season contract with HBO for True Detective. However, there have been no indications from HBO as to when the show will be renewed. It should be noted that the second season did not perform as well as the first season. This led many observers to conclude that the show might not be renewed for another season. HBO’s vague responses to commentators has not helped the matter either. Yet, there have been some indications from HBO that it is interested in a third season, and it is Nic Pizzolatto, who has been unable to make himself available to start working on the third season. As to when that might happen, is still a mystery.
