Downey Jr. was born and raised in the Manhattan neighborhood of Greenwich Village, an area known for both its artistic history and rampant drug use among many of its inhabitants. Robert was no different and often did drugs with his father who was also an actor and director. During the late 90s, Downey Jr. had many legal troubles because of illicit drug use but has been clean since 2003.

Downey Jr. has been instrumental in the recent resurgence of the comic book film, starring as Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man, in a number of high budget, hit films from Marvel Studios. The Avengers set the all time box office record for opening weekends and is the third highest grossing film of all time. Downey’s other franchise, Sherlock Holmes, was a surprise hit and a third film is in development.
