Cruise, whose full legal name is Thomas Cruise Mapother IV, grew up in Syracuse, NY at a near poverty level.  He was raised with three sisters and both his parents were of a working class background.  He has stated that his father was very abusive to him when he was growing up and physically beat him.


He became active in both theater and sports at a young age.  By grade four he was performing in local plays and in high school he had already played floor hockey, wrestling and enjoying being on the football team.
