1904 – He was born on the 26th day of March in Athens. He studied economics at the University of Athens, and later studied in Leipzig and Paris. He was a scion of a wealthy family of goldsmiths with roots in pre-revolutionary Russia.
1928 – He became Professor of Economics at Athens University, a post he held for four decades.
1944 – He was governor of the Bank of Greece for one year.
1946 – He was a member of the Board of Directors of UNRRA. He also held senior posts in the International Monetary Fund and other international organization.
1955 – He became the governor of the Bank of Greece for the second time until 1967.
1967 –He resigned in protest at the military regime which had come to power in this year.
1974 – He was the Governor of the Bank of Greece for the third time which he held the position until 1981.
1989 – At the age of 85, agreed to become Prime Minister at head of a non-party administration until fresh elections could be held.
1990 – He resigned when the election of April 1990 gave Mitsotakis a narrow majority.
2004 – He died at 100 years of age.
