1946 – He was born on the 26th day of February in Damanhur, Egypt which is 60 km south-east of Alexandria) and raised in Disuq, and received his first degree from the University of Alexandria before moving from Egypt to the United States to complete his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania.
1976 – After his post doctorate work at the University of California, Berkeley, he was awarded a faculty appointment at Caltech.
1978 – He won a Nobel Prize for Peace in Anwar Sadat.
1982 – He became a naturalized citizen of the United States.
1988 – He won Naguib Mahfouz in Literature.
1990 – He was made the first Linus Pauling Chair in Chemical Physics.
1993 – He won Wolf Prize in Chemistry.
1997 – He won the Robert A. Welch Award.
1999 – He won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his work on femtochemistry and received Egypt’s highest state honor, the Grand Collar of the Nile.
2006 – Cambridge University awarded him an Honorary Doctorate in Science
