1904 – Born – June 2nd, in Timisoara, Romania. Although many older sources claim that Weissmuller was born in Windber, Pennsylvania, the son of Austrian immigrants, it has become known since his death that he was born in Freidorf, near Timisoara, Hungary (now in Romania). His parents immigrated to Windber when he was three years old, and his father supported the family by working as a coal miner. Later, Weissmuller simply claimed that he had been born in Pennsylvania.
1924 – He won five gold medals as a swimmer at the 1924 and 1928 Olympics, setting many free-style records.
1920s-1930s – Weissmuller appeared in several sports shorts, then was hired by MGM to play Tarzan onscreen.
1932 – he starred in 12 "Tarzan" adventures, meanwhile doing almost no other film work.
1948 – he quit "Tarzan" and began starring in a new series, "Jungle Jim," while occasionally appearing in other films through the mid ’50s, after which he retired from acting.
-He was married six times. He had three children, Wendy, John, and Heide, with his fifth wife, Allene Gates. His stormy marriage to actress Lupe Velez (1933-38) received much coverage in scandal sheets.
1967 – He authored an autobiography, Water, World and Weissmuller.
