1844 – Born on March 14th in Turin, Piedmont, Kingdom of Sardinia (Italy). The duke of Savoy and king of Italy who led his country out of its isolation and into the Triple Alliance with Austria-Hungary and Germany.

1866 – Umberto first fought in the war against Austria.

         – The calm and decisive leadership he showed in saving his troops at the Italian debacle at Custoza won him great popularity.

1868 – Married to his cousin Margherita Teresa Giovanna, princess of Savoy on April 22nd.

1878 – Umberto ascended the throne as the King of Italy on January 9th.

1882 – Maintained an authoritarian view of the king’s prerogative, which he used to bring Italy into the Triple Alliance with Germany and Austria-Hungary.

1898 – Umberto condoned the imposition of martial law and the harsh repression that followed, especially at Milan.

1900 – Died on July 29th in Monza, Italy, assassinated by an anarchist, Gaetano Bresci.
