1935 – Born in Wuhan, mainland China on 24th of July.

1949 – Tien and his family fled to Taiwan at the end of the Chinese Civil War.

1955 – He earned a BS in mechanical engineering from the National Taiwan University.

1956 – He went on to a fellowship at the University of Louisville.

1957 – He received a MME in heat transfer.

1959 – He then earned his MA and PhD degrees in mechanical engineering from Princeton University.

         – Tien joined UC Berkeley faculty as an assistant professor of mechanical engineering, and three years later, at the age of 26, became the youngest professor ever to be honored with UC Berkeley’s Distinguished Teaching Award.

1968 – He was promoted to full professor.

1974 – He served as the Chair of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

1983 – He served as vice chancellor of research.

1988 – Tien spent his entire career at Berkeley, except, when he was executive vice-chancellor of UC Irvine.

1999 – Tien received the prestigious title of "University Professor."

2002 – Died on the 29th of October in Redwood City, California at the age of 67.
