1762 – Born on July 12th near Delta, Peachbottom Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

         – He attended a classical school near Delta and later became an instructor of Latin in what is now Washington and Jefferson College, Washington, Pennsylvania.

1784 – He studied law; admitted to the bar and commenced practice in Washington, Washington County, Pennsylvania.

1789-1790 – A delegate to the State constitutional convention.

1794-1803 – He was elected as a Pro-Administration (later Federalist) to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the Senate declaring the election of Albert Gallatin void.

         – Was reelected and served as President pro tempore of the Senate during the Fifth Congress.

         – He moved to Pittsburgh.

         – An unsuccessful candidate for governor of Pennsylvania and resumed the practice of law.

1847 – He died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on November 27th; interment in Allegheny Cemetery.
