Roger Hardy is the co-founder and CEO of Coastal Contacts, an online retailer of contact lenses and eyeglasses that supplies their customers with the same designer brands and products offered in brick-and-mortar stores for half the price.
After studying political science at Quebec’s Bishop’s University, Roger left Ontario to ski Whistler and surf the Baja. He settled in Vancouver, BC, and joined the Loomis organization, first as local account manager, learning transportation and logistics, and then in managing large national accounts. While working in regional sales for a US based contact lens manufacturer, he decided to go on his own. In 1999, he and Coastal Contacts president Bill Wrixon launched a new company selling contact lenses online and hit $1 million in sales before selling out nine months later to More.com. When More.com went under during the tech crash, Hardy bought the company back for less than he had sold it for.
Coastal Contacts began as a classic start-up operation with one computer but quickly expanded as the brand gained international recognition. The company has grown to over 350 employees located around the globe and serves a base of close to 2 million active customers in 150 different countries. In February 2002, co-founder Roger Hardy won the BIV Top 40 under 40 Award. In 2004, the company went public on the TSX Venture Exchange. In 2006, he was named Ernst and Young, Entrepreneur of the Year (Pacific Region) in the Business to Consumer category.
In 2006 Coastal Contacts graduated to the TSX, Canada’s senior stock exchange In Canada, Coastal Contacts Inc. operates under the brand name Clearly Contacts. Roger credits his early career in sales with an armoured-car courier for much of his success with Coastal Contacts, citing a solid grounding in logistics as the backbone of his global online retail operation. Coastal Contacts sells brand name high quality Contacts Lenses and Eyeglasses that includes both Men’s Glasses and Women’s Glasses
