1837 – Born on the 2nd of May in Robertville, South Carolina.

1857 – Graduating fourth in his class at West Point.

1867 – 1871 – Served as Engineer of the Army’s Division of the Pacific.

1876 – He is most famous for his Pocket Manual of Rules of Order for Deliberative Assemblies — a collection of rules regarding parliamentary procedure, published.

1895 – 1901 – He was president of the Board of Engineers.

1897 – 1901 – Served as Southwest Division Engineer.

1901 – He was made brigadier general on the 30th of April, and was appointed Chief of Engineers.

       – He served until 2nd of May, when he retired from the Army.

1902 – He chaired a board of engineers that designed the Galveston seawall following the Galveston Hurricane.

1923 – Died on the 11th of May in Hornell, New York.
