1862 – Born on November 4th in Mount Abu, Rajasthan, India. British novelist, poet, and dramatist especially noted for novels evoking their Devon setting in a manner reminiscent of the style of Thomas Hardy.

1898 – Phillpotts’ literary career began with Children of the Mist.

         – Worked as a clerk for Sun Fire Insurance Company, London.

1916 – He was best known as author of the play, The Farmer’s Wife.

1933 – He wrote in his mystery, A Shadow Passes and many of his articles on religion expressed skepticism.

1960 – Died on December 29th in Broad Clyst, near Exeter, Devon, England.

         – Published over 250 works including some 150 novels plus poems, essays, plays, short stories, and mysteries.
