1686 – Born on May 24, in Danzig (now GdaDsk, Poland) was a German physicist and engineer who worked most of his life in the Netherlands.


1714 – Invented the first mercury thermometer.


1717 – Settled in The Hague with the trade of glassblowing, making barometer, altimeter and thermometer.


1718 – And onwards, he gave lectures in chemistry in Amsterdam.


1724 – Became a member of the "Royal Society of London for the Improvement of Natural Knowledge".
