236 – He was chosen despite being a layman and a stranger, Saint Fabian, martyr, became pope.


250 –  After years of peace, Emperor Trajan Decius issued an edit ordering that all Christians are to deny Christ. Proof was required by having the renounced Christians offer incense to pagan alters. Although no historical details are found, the fourth century Depositio Martyrum says that Pontian was martyred on the 20th of January.
