1927 – Born on the 16th of February. He is noted for his study of slavery and abolitionism.


         – He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University.


1967 – Won the Pulitzer Prize in General Non-Fiction, as well as the National Book Award, and Bancroft Prize.


1970 – He taught for 14 years at in the Department of History at Cornell University before moving to Yale.


1988-1989 – Served as President of Organization of American Historians.


1998-2004 – Became the Director Emeritus of Yale’s Gilder Lehrman Center for the Study of Slavery, Resistance, and Abolition, which he founded.
