Dr. Daniel L. Waldman is the President and Podiatric Physician/Surgeon at Blue Ridge Podiatry Associates PA in Asheville, North Carolina. He also currently serves on the Science Advisory Board for Nuvolase, Inc., a medical laser development company, in Chico, California. In 2012 he was appointed to the Medical Advisory committee for the Washington DC based Liberty Business Bureau, an organization based on free market principles and Libertarianism.
Dr. Dan Waldman was born and raised in the Detroit, Michigan suburbs and attended Michigan State University. He graduated MSU with high honors in 1987 obtaining a Bachelors degree in psychology with a focus on pre-med courses. During his undergraduate years at Michigan State University he assisted the psychology department in cognitive based research and performed human anatomical dissection for the MSU School of Osteopathic Medicine. He participated in organized opposition to the University’s financial investments with the Apartheid regime in South Africa and also participated in varies social demonstrations including "Hands Across America".
After graduating MSU he married Cathy Hebert RN and the couple moved to Chicago, IL where Dan enrolled at the Scholl College of Podiatric Medicine ( now part of the Finch School of Medicine). While enrolled at SCPM on a partial academic scholarship he tutored neuroanatomy, was admitted into the Durlacher Honors Society, and served as Senior Class President of Phi Alpha Pi fraternity. He graduated Cum laude in 1991 as a Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (DPM).
Prior to the start of his surgical residency Dr. Waldman worked with Dr. Mark Valinsky in Oak Park, IL. Dr. Valinsky was a visionary pioneer in the field of Minimal Incision Surgery (MISx)and Dr. Waldman learned these techniques under his guidance. Dr. Waldman also assisted with Dr. Valinsky’s location at the prestigious Water Tower Place surgery center on Chicago’s "Miracle Mile" of Michigan Ave.
Dr. Waldman’s formal surgical training was done at the Jerry L. Pettis Veterans Administration Medical Center in Loma Linda, California in 1992. He served as Senior Podiatric Surgical Resident overseeing new podiarty residents and new monthly 4th year students. He shared his skills of Minimal Incision Surgery with his attending surgeons. Dr. Waldman also gave a presentation to the Orange County Podiatry Society regarding toe implants during his residency.
After residency the couple moved to Asheville, North Carolina in 1993 where Dr. Waldman started private practice at Blue Ridge Podiatry Associates, PA. After passing the written exam he was granted Associate membership to the American Board of Podiatric Surgeons and in 2000 was granted Diplomate membership after passing oral examination and surgical case reviews. He also is a Fellow of the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons and an Associate of the Academy of Ambulatory Foot Surgeons. He is on medical staff at Memorial Mission Hospital, The Orthopedic Surgery Center of Asheville, and Park Ridge Hospital.
In addition to foot surgery Dr. Waldman is a leading podiatrist in the field of LASER based treatments for onychomychosis, verrucae, and musculo-skeletal pathologies. As of the first Asheville Podiatrists to use LASER toenail therapy he has performed thousands of laser treatments for toenail fungus. His pioneering approach to this embarrassing and chronic condition has brought him media attention including interviews on local TV news, AestheticTV.com, NailPro Magazine, and most recently the French addition of Marie-Claire magazine. He serves on the Science Advisory Board for Nuvolase, Inc. which developed the PinPointe Foot Laser. His white paper on this nail treatment was recently published for Cynosure, Inc. Dr. Waldman has given numerous presentations about this revolutionary treatment to physicians across the country and the world. He is an Associate of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and is a Member of the Council for Nail Disorders.
Dr. Waldman is an avid supporter of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America program. He was matched as a Big Brother to a young boy in 1993. The two have kept in touch and the boy he mentored is now an attorney specializing in international art law. Dr. Waldman served on the Board of Directors for BB/BS of Western NC in the 1990’s and sponsors the organization’s annual 5K run.
Dr. Waldman likes living in the mountains of western North Carolina where he enjoys hiking and time with his family. He is a licensed private pilot and collects books on early aviation. His wife, Cathy Hebert RN, has a Master’s degree in Geriatric Nursing and works as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Memorial Mission Hospitals. The couple has two teenaged children with one in college and the other in high school.
