1962 – She was born on the 7th day of March of this year in Karnal, Haryana, India. Kalpana Chawla studied aeronautical engineering at Punjab Engineering College in Chandigarh, India.


1982 – She earned her Bachelor of Science degree. She was one of the three girls in the school at the time. She moved to the United States in the same year.


1983 – This year, Kalpana Chawla married Jean-Pierre Harrison.


1984 – She attained her Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Texas at Arlington in this year.


1986 – Chawla earned a second Master of Science degree in mechanical engineering in this year and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering in 1988 from the University of Colorado at Boulder.


1990 – In this year, she became a naturalized United States citizen.


1991 – Chawla’s last visit to India was during this year, during new year holiday when she and her husband spent time with her family. For various reasons, Chawla was never able to follow up on invitations to visit India after she became an astronaut.


1995 – Chawla joined the NASA astronaut corps in March of this year. She was selected for her first flight in 1996.


2000 – She was selected for her second flight as part of the crew of STS-107. This mission was repeatedly delayed due to scheduling conflicts, and technical problems such as the July 2002 discovery of cracks in the shuttle engine flow liners.


2003 – On the 16th day of January of this year, she finally returned to space aboard Columbia on the ill-fated STS-107 mission.She died on the 1st of February of this year in Texas. She was one of seven crewmembers lost aboard Space Shuttle Columbia during mission STS-107 when the shuttle disintegrated upon reentry into the Earth’s atmosphere. Kalpana Chawla is a recipient of the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.
