1950 – He wrote for the San Francisco Examiner.

1958-1997 – He served again as columnist for The San Francisco Chronicle.

         – He coined the term "beatnik" in his 2nd of April, column.

1967 – He popularized the word "hippie" during San Francisco’s Summer of Love.

1996 – He received a special award from the Pulitzer Prize board.

1997 – He died on the 1st of February of lung cancer in San Francisco.
