1861 – Born on October 16th in Clontibret, County Monaghan. Irish historian, scholar and philologist.

1885 – He was educated at Trinity College, Dublin, where he was elected to a fellowship.

1893 – He was chosen professor of modern history at Dublin.

1898 – He became regius professor of Greek.

1902 – He was elected regius professor of modern history in the university of Cambridge.

1905 – He also wrote a History of Greece to the Death of Alexander the Great; History of the Later Roman Empire,a History of the Roman Empire 27 B.C.-180 A.D.; Life of St Patrick and his Place in History.

         – He was elected a fellow of King’s College, Cambridge, and received honorary degrees from the universities of Oxford, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Aberdeen and Durham.

1927 – Died on June 1st.
