1929 – Billington was born on the 1st of June in Mawr, Pennsylvania.

       – He earned his doctorate from Balliol College, Oxford, where he was a Rhodes scholar.

1956 – Authored the book "Mikhailovsky and Russian Populism".

1957-1962 – Served as professor of history at Harvard University.

1964-1974 – At Princeton University, he was a professor of history.

1966 – Wrote "The Icon and the Axe".

1973-1987 – Served as Director of the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

       – He founded the Kennan Institute for Advanced Russian Studies.

1980 – Authored the book "Fire in the Minds of Men".

1987 – Served as the 13th Librarian of Congress on 14th of September.

1992 – Wrote "Russia Transformed: Breakthrough to Hope, August 91’".

2002 – Received an honorary doctorate from the University of Oxford in November.
