Winstone’s frequent tough guy roles can be traced back to real life occurrences for the English actor. While at his secondary school, he was considered to be a bad influence by the faculty there and when he was slighted by not being invited to a Christmas party, Winstone responded by hammering some nails into a board and placing it under the headmistresses’ back tire, blowing them out.
Winstone is an avid boxer and began the sport at an early age, and was known as Little Slugs by his family; his father was known as Sugar, named so after Sugar Ray Robinson. His record as an amateur fighter was 80-8 and he won the London schoolboy championship three times. He has stated that this fearlessness in the ring prepared him for acting.
