1980 – Served as the governor of the Reserve Bank of India.


1991-1996 – Indian finance minister.

         – He has been a member of the Rajya Sabha for Assam.

         – Was elevated to finance minister in by Prime Minister Narasimha Rao.

1999 – He did not join the rebels in a major split which occurred, when three Congress leaders objected to Sonia Gandhi’s rise as Congress President and Leader of the Opposition.

         – Lost his seat in the Lok Sabha from South Delhi.

2002 – He was awarded the Outstanding Parliamentarian Award.


2004 – Prime minister of India.


2005 – Indian foreign minister.


2006 – He made it clear in his address to Parliament regarding his Nuclear Deal with US.
