1870 - Born on July 26th near Bilbao, Spain. Spanish genre and portrait painter noted for his theatrical paintings of figures from Spanish culture and folklore.
1885 - Visited the Prado and copied El Greco.
1889 - Spent six months in Rome, then lived mainly in Paris for several years on friendly terms with Toulouse-Lautrec, Gauguin, Rodin, Mallarm-23 and the Spanish painter Rusifiol.
1890 - He completed his first picture, which was exhibited at the Paris Salon.
1892 - Traveled in Andalusia aroused his passion for Spanish gypsies, bullfighters and peasants, who became the subjects for many of his later pictures; influenced by the tradition of Velazquez and Goya.
1907 - A fully illustrated account of the artist and his work, by M. Utrillo, was published in a special number of Forma.
1912 - Awarded the Grand Prix at the Rome International Exhibition.
1938 - Was awarded the main painting prize at the Venice Biennale.
1945 - Died on October 31st in Madrid.
