1914 – An American oncologist who played a prominent role in the introduction of chemotherapy for cancer was born this year.
1932 – He studied at Georgetown Preparatory School.
1940 – He went to college in Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, served in the U.S. army medical corps during World War II, where he worked on a replacement for quinine in the treatment of malaria.
1946 – He commenced work at Johns Hopkins University Medical School, and was appointed assistant professor of medicine.
1953 – He became the Director of research at Saint Louis University.
1956 – He became head of the Division of Cancer Treatment of the National Cancer Institute.
1954 – He became clinical Director of the National Institutes of Health.
1961 – He became Scientific Director.
