1812 - Birth of the Chinese general and statesman
1644-1911 - Helped revitalize the foundering Qing Dynasty
- With Li Hongzhang and Zeng Guofan he quelled the Taiping Rebellion, subsequently becoming governor of his native Hunan province, governor-general of Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, military commander in campaigns against the Nein and Chinese Muslim rebellions, and court advisor on a wide range of subjects. An advocate of modernization for Chinese military, Zuo arranged the foreign purchase and domestic manufacture of modern arms
1866 - He founded an arsenal, navy yard, and technical school at Fuxou
1885 - Died on September 5
