1951 – He graduated in New York University.
   
1956 – He was appointed chairman of the department of history and social sciences at Spelman College, where he participated in the Civil Rights movement.
 
1958 – He received his M.A and Ph.D., from Columbia University
   
1961 – He receives his Post-doctoral Fellow at the Harvard University.
   
1964 – He joined the faculty at Boston University where he taught history and civil liberties until 1988.
