1945 – She was born on the 15th day of August this year at Dinajpur District of Bangladesh. She is the widow of assassinated president Ziaur Rahman, and leads his old party, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party. 1983 –In March of this year, Justice Sattar appointed Khaleda Zia vice-chairman of BNP. 1984 – She became the acting chairperson as Justice Sattar retired from politics and on August of the same year the party elected her the chairperson. 1990 – She led mass movement for restoration of democracy in Bangladesh ended in December of this year with the downfall of the autocratic regime of General H.M. Ershad. 1991 – She was made as Bangladesh's first woman Prime Minister by the support of the majority of the members of the parliament. 1996 – She became Prime Minister for the second consecutive term after the BNP had a landslide victory. 1996 – She became Leader of the opposition in Bangladesh Parliament. 2001 – It was her third term. She was elected from as many as five parliamentary seats in each of the three general elections since 1991. 2006 – Her term in office ended. The following day rioting broke out on the streets of central Dhaka following uncertainty over who would succeed her as Chief Adviser. 2007 – She and her son, Tareque Rahman, was arrested for corruptions by the Fakhruddin Ahmed’s caretaker government. 2008 – In September released from jail and participated in parliament election and became leader of opposition for 2nd time.
