240 - Julia Aurelia Zenobia, born there probably of Arab descent. She became the wife of the Bedouin Odenathus, lord of the city, who was recognized by Gallienus as Governor of the East.

267 - 271 - Reigned as Queen of Palmyra.

269 - On her husband's murder, she embarked on a war of expansion, conquered Egypt.

270 - Overran nearly the whole of the East provinces in Asia Minor, and declared her son the Eastern emperor.
