1939 – He was born in the province of Ji'an, Jiangxi sometime in July.

1960 – He joined the Communist Party of China (CPC) in April.

1979 – He held a series of management positions in the state petroleum sector right after he joined the State Development and Reform Commission.

1984 – He moved to Shanghai Municipal Government, where he became a key ally of then-mayor Jiang Zemin.

1989 – He was brought by newly elevated Jiang to national leadership in Beijing as his trusted advisor. And he became the Deputy Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee.

1999 – As the head of the Organization Department of the CPC his position was strengthened by promoting members of the president's "Shanghai clique" to leading central and regional posts.

2001 – He spoke in the center group meeting of the CCP Organization Department and encouraged that at all levels should participate in the long-term combat with “Falun Gong”.

2002 – He has been a member of the 16th CPC Central Committee,

2003 – He became the Vice-President of the People's Republic of China following his election by the National People's Congress, thus replacing his predecessor Hu Jintao,

2004 – He was also expected to succeed Hu as Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission as a condition of Jiang's resignation from the chairmanship in favor of Hu. Though, when Jiang stepped down, Xu Caihou and not he replaced Hu.
