1924 - Born on October 20th in Portland, Oregon. Original member of San Francisco's Beat poets, along with Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac.
1943 - Served the United States Army Air Corps.
1951 - Graduated from Reed College.
1960-1972 - Wrote Like I Say, Memoirs of an Interglacial Age, Every Day, You Didn't Even Try, On Bear's Head and Imaginary Speeches for a Brazen Head.
1973 - Ordained a Zen Buddhist priest.
1978-1995 - Wrote Decompressions, Off the Wall: Interviews with Philip Whalen, Enough Said, Heavy Breathing: Poems, 1967–1980 and Canoeing up Carbaga Creek: Buddhist Poems, 1955–1986.
1999 - Appeared in the film The Source as himself.
2002 - Died on June 26th in San Francisco, California.
