1919 - Born in June 14th in Chicago, Illinois. American actor and film director.

1940 - Married to Charlotte Holland.

1952 - Trained at Goodman Theatre, Chicago, worked with summer stock companies in Chicago as an actor and director, and made his London debut.

         - Become blacklisted by the House Un-American Activities Committee after filming Mr. Denning Drives North in the U.K.

1957 - Appointed director of the New Shakespeare Theatre, Liverpool.

1959 - Joined the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre company at Stratford-upon-Avon.

1974-1986 - He worked both as director and actor in films and television, his appearances included Spiral Staircase, Private Benjamin, Superman IV, and Baby Boom.

1993 - Died on December 18th in London, England.

         - He was awarded an honorary CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) in Queen's New Years Honours List for his services to the Globe Theater.

1994 - He was awarded the Laurence Olivier Theatre Award: Society of London Theatre's Special Award for Lifetime Achievement.
