Wallace, Alfred Russel
1823 - Born on January 8th in Usk, Monmouthshire, Wales. British humanist, naturalist, geographer, and social critic.
1840 - Began to take an interest in botany, and began the formation of a herbarium. In 1847 he took his first journey out of England, spending a week in Paris with his brother and sister.
1844-1845 - An English master in the Collegiate School at Leicester and made the acquaintance of H. W.
1953 - Wallace's Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro was published, a year in which he went for a fortnight's walking tour in Switzerland with an old schoolfellow.
1866 - Wallace was married to the eldest daughter of the botanist, William Mitten, of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex.
1868 - He had received the Royal Medal.
1870-1871 - He was president of the Entomological Society of London.
- Wallace's two essays, written at Sarawak and Ternate, were published with others as a volume, Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection.
1881 - Wallace published Miracles and Modern Spiritualism.
- A pension was awarded him by Gladstone.
1882-1889 - He received the degree of D.C.L. from Oxford and of LL.D. from the university of Dublin.
- Published Land Nationalization, in which he argued the necessity of state ownership of land, a principle which he had originated long before the appearance of Henry George's work.
1890 - The first Darwin medal of the Royal Society was awarded to Wallace.
1913 - Died on November 7th in Broadstone, Dorset, England.
