initially fought against Germans 1941-1942

 

captured by Germans 1942 and began criticizing Soviet military management, announcing formation of Russian Liberation Movement

 

published Smolensk Appeal 1942, urging Russians to overthrow Communist regime

 

remained in German captivity 1942-1944 and received rhetorical support from Nazis

 

when released by Germans, founded Russian Liberation Army 1944

 

commander-in-chief of Russian Liberation Army 1944-1945, leading forays against front line of Soviet troops

 

surrendered to US forces in Czechoslovakia 1945, but deported to Soviet Union for trial

 

executed for treason, along with eleven subordinates
