1925 - Born on October 3rd in West Point, New York.

1943-1946 - Served the United States Army as an Army Reserve.

         - Wrote the novels Williwaw, The City and the Pillar, Julian, Washington, D.C., Myra Breckenridge, Burr, 1876, Creation, Lincoln, Empire, Hollywood, Live from Golgotha, The Smithsonian Institution and The Golden Age.

1954 - Won the Edgard Allan Poe Award for Best Episode in a TV Series, Suspense, "Smoke".

1955-1960 - He wrote the plays "Visit to a Small Planet and The Best Man.

         - Democratic candidate for House of Representatives from New York.

1970-1972 - He was the co-chairman of People's Party.

1982 - He was a candidate for Democratic nomination to Senate from California.

1993 - Won the National Book Award for Nonfiction for "United States: Essays 1952-1992".

1994-2005 - Appeared as an actor in Inside Deep Throat, Why We Fight, Gattaca, Shadow Conspiracy, The Celluloid Closet and With Honors.
