1910 - Born on August 26th in sküb, Ottoman Empire [Skopje, Macedonia]. Indian philanthropist and religious leader.

1928 - Agnes left home in September, for the Loreto Convent in Rathfarnam (Dublin), Ireland, where she was admitted as a postulant on October 12th and received the name of Teresa, after her patroness, St. Therese of Lisieux.

1929 - Agnes was sent by the Loreto order to India and arrived in Calcutta on January 6th and joined the Loreto novitiate in Darjeeling.

1937 - She made her final profession as a Loreto nun on May 24th, and hereafter was called Mother Teresa.

1946 - On September 10th, during a train journey, she was inspired to dedicate herself to the poorest.

         - Sister Teresa experienced her “call within a call,” which she considered divine inspiration to devote herself to caring for the sick and poor.

1950 - She founded the Order of the Missionaries of Charity, a Roman Catholic congregation of women dedicated to the poor, particularly to the destitute of India.

1952 - She established Nirmal Hriday (“Place for the Pure of Heart”), a hospice where the terminally ill could die with dignity.

1971 - In recognition of her apostolate, she was honoured on January 6th, by Pope Paul, who awarded her the first Pope John XXIII Peace Prize.

1973 - She was awarded the inaugural Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion.

1974 - Diagnosed with heart problems, a fact which she tried to keep secret.

1979 - She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo, the most prestigious of many awarded her around the world.

1982 - She was awarded an Honorary A.C. (Companion of the Order of Australia) on January 26th for her services to Australia and humanity worldwide.

1985 - Marvel Comics published a comic book about her life entitled: Mother Teresa of Calcutta.

         - Mother Teresa spoke at the fortieth anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly in October.

1989 - She suffered ill health and had a heart attack.

1990 - She resigned as head of the order but was returned to office by a near unanimous vote—the lone dissenting voice was her own.

1991 - She opened the cathedral in Tirana which had been used as a cinema by the dictator Hoxha and she opened three houses in Albania.

1997 - Died from heart failure on September 5th in Calcutta, India.

2003 - She was beatified by Pope John Paul II, reaching the ranks of the blessed in the shortest time in the history of the church on October 19th.
