1912 - Elizabeth Taylor, novelist and short-story writer, was born at Reading, Berkshire, on July 3rd, the daughter of Oliver Coles, an insurance agent, and Elsie, née Fewtrell.
1914 - She attended The Abbey School – formerly Reading High School, but renamed after the school where Jane Austen had briefly been a pupil.
1930 - Elizabeth worked as a governess, and later as librarian of Boots’ Library in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
1936 - She married John William Kendall Taylor, the director of a confectionery firm; they had a son and a daughter. After the war, in which John Taylor served in the RAF, the family settled in Penn, Buckinghamshire, where Elizabeth spent the rest of her life.
1945-1947 - Her first novel, "At Mrs Lippincote’s", was published, followed by "Palladian" and "A View of the Harbour".
1949-1972 - Her subsequent novels were "A Wreath of Roses", "A Game of Hide and Seek", "The Sleeping Beauty", "Angel", "In a Summer Season", "The Soul of Kindness", "The Wedding Group", "Mrs Palfrey at the Claremont", and posthumously "Blaming"; her short stories were collected in "Hester Lilly", "The Blush", "A Dedicated Man" and "The Devastating Boys".
1975 - She died of cancer on November 19th, aged 63.
