Eric Stolz was born on September 30th in Whittier, California.
Eric Stoltz is an American actor, director and producer who has starred in both independent films and short films and studio films. Eric grew up in both Santa Barbara CA and American Samoa. At the age of fourteen Eric earned money by playing piano for some of the locally produced musical theater shows. One such production was "Mame" which starred future "ER" cast member Anthony Edwards. For a while he was in a reperatory company that performed at the Edinborough Festival in Scotland.
He returned to the US and attended the University of Southern California but dropped out to persure his film and theater career. He was in the TV movie, Erma Bombeck’s "The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank" with Carol Burnett and Charles Grodin in 1979 Moving to New York in 1981, he studied with Stella Adler. He was soon castd in his first film, the teen slice of life movie "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" written by Cameron Crowe and starring many of the names that would dominate the 1980s theater marquees. He became good friends with Cameron Crowe and went on to appear both in front of the camera and as crew on many films directed by Crowe. He was nominated for a Golden Globe in 1985 for his portrayal of Rocky Dennis in the movie "Mask" with Cher.
He also starred in the John Hughes film "Some Kind of Wonderful" with Lea Thompson. He was cast as Marty McFly in "Back to the Future" but after four weeks of shooting director Robert Zemeckis and producer Steven Speilberg felt he wasn’t right for the part. It then went to the filmmaker’s first choice Michael J Fox. He made his Broadway debut in "Our Town" which was recorded for PBS. He was nominated for a Tony Award for this performance. He played a recurring character as Helen Hunt’s ex boyfriend on "Mad About You" from 1994 to 1998. He also spent a year on "Chicago Hope". He was also cast in the tv and cable movies "Inside" which was directed by Arthur Penn, "A Killer in the Family" which starred Robert Mitchum and "The Passion of Ayn Rand" featuring Helen Mirren. Mr. Stoltz has been linked romantically to many beautiful actresses including Ally Sheedy, Lili Taylor, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Bridget Fonda, and with the Australian actor Rachel Griffiths. In 2004 he appeared on Broadway with Richard Dreyfus in Larry Gelbart’s "Sly Fox" which was directed by Arthur Penn.
Other movies of note he has appeared in are "Pulp Fiction," "THe Waterdance," "Killing Zoe," "The Buterfly Effect," "Singles," "Jerry McGuire," "The Passion of Ayn Rand," and "Harvard Man" as well as TV shows "Grey’s Anatomy," "Will and Grace," "Law and Order," and most recently he was the star of the science fiction serice "Caprica." which had a one season run in 2010. "Caprica" was a prequel to the series "Battle Star Galactica." In 2002 he was nominated for a daytime Emmy for directing the children’s movie "My Horrible Year," for cable TV. He has also directed for "Grey’s Anatomy" and directed the highest rated episode of "Law and Order," 2005’s "Tombstone."
He is also a vegetarian.
