1923 - Born on the 19th of January in New York City.

1954 - She got her start on-stage in the '40s and made her first appearance on television in the series Woman With a Past.

1953 - Her first Broadway appearance was in the production.

1970 - She is best known for her portrayal of the long suffering, yet devoted wife of Archie Bunker and mother of Gloria Bunker St, Edith Bunker on the popular and groundbreaking 1970s situation comedy All in the Family.

1958 - She made her first appearance at the Totem Pole Playhouse in Fayetteville, PA, a summer-stock operation managed by her husband, Bill Putch.

1989 - She won the Obie Award for both The Birthday Party and Mountain Language.

1995 - She startled her Edith Bunker fans with her con brio portrayal of Lea Thompson's sex-starved aunt in an episode of Caroline in the City.

1999 - She also had a recurring role on TV's Scarecrow and Mrs. King as a British spy. Stapleton appeared in the movie You've Got Mail.

2001 - Stapleton attended the funeral of Carroll O'Connor, along with Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers.
