US army officer and explorer.
1807 - Born on the 24th of April in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
1825 - Graduated from the United States Military Academy and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the 2nd U.S. Artillery.
1838-1843 - Returned to West Point as an instructor and was appointed Commandant of Cadets as a first lieutenant.
1848 - In Mexico City, he was in charge of the police guard from the end of the war.
1856-1857 - Commanded the Red River expedition in Minnesota.
1857-1860 - Served under Albert Sidney Johnston in Utah
1860-1861 - Commanded the Department of Utah and the Department of Washington.
1861 - Smith served on recruiting duty as commander of Fort Columbus, New York.
1862 - Died on the 25th of April because of an infection, leg injury and chronic dysentery at Savannah, Tennessee.
