1943 – He was born on the 5th day of November this year in Fort Sheridan, Illinois. His many works are known for being frank and often absurd, and for having an authentic sense of the style and sensibility of the gritty modern American west. Shepard is also a respected actor of stage and motion pictures.

 

1963 – This year found him working as a kitchen helper in Greenwich Village. During this time, Sam Shepard was using illicit drugs. He became very much involved in New York's off-off-Broadway theater scene.

 

1969 – He married actress O-Lan Jones this year until 1984, by whom he has one son, Jesse Mojo Shepard born in 1970.

 

1978 – One of his notable works was Curse of the Starving Class.

 

1979 – His play “Buried Child” received a Pulitzer Prize in this year.

 

1983 – After the end of his relationship with the singer and musician Patti Smith, he met Oscar-winning actress Jessica Lange on the set of a movie they both starred in, Frances. He moved in with her this year.

 

1986 – He was elected to The American Academy of Arts and Letters.

 

1994 – He was inducted into the Theatre Hall of Fame. Of his 45+ plays, 11 of them have won Obie Awards.

 

1996 - He was nominated for two Tony Awards for Buried Child in this year.

 

2000 – He was nominated for the second time in Tony Awards for his movie True West.
