1971 - Joined the Anti-Vietnam War Liberty Union Party in Vermont.
1972 - He was an unsuccessful candidate for election to the United States Senate and Governor in Vermont.
1977 - Resigned from Liberty Union Party in Vermont.
1981 - He was elected as Mayor of Burlington, Vermont.
1987 - He was re-elected Mayor of Burlington, Vermont.
1988 - He was an unsuccessful candidate to the 101st Congress.
1991 - Elected as an independent to the 102nd and to the seven succeeding Congresses.
2006 - He was elected to the United States Senate.
