1942 - Born in May 2nd in Ghent, Belgium. Orthopaedic surgeon, and former rugby player and Olympic competitor.

1968-1976 - He competed in the Games of the Olympiad in Mexico, Munich and Montreal.

1989 - President of the European Olympic Committees (EOC).

1999 - He was the former Chairman of the Medical Commission of the ISAF and World Anti-Doping Agency Council Member.

2000 - Chairman of the Coordination Commissions for the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney.

2001 - He faced a flood of problems when he took over the helm of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in July, succeeding outgoing president Juan António Samaranch of Spain, a figure who became nearly synonymous with the triumphs and excesses of the modern Olympic movement.

2004 - Chairman of the Coordination Commissions for the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad, in Athens.
