1929 - Jane Roberts was an American author who was known primarily as a psychic and trance medium or spirit medium who "channeled" a personality named Seth.
1963 - She and her husband, Robert Butts, experimented with a Ouija board as part of Roberts' research for a book on extra-sensory perception. According to Roberts and Butts, on the 2nd of December, they began to receive coherent messages from a male personality who eventually identified himself as Seth. Soon after, Roberts reported that she was hearing the messages in her head.
1969 - Published in summary form in The Seth Material, which was written by Roberts with substantial excerpts from the Seth personality.
1970 - Beginning with the 511th session in January, the Seth personality began to dictate his own books. Roberts claimed no authorship of these books beyond her role as medium, and according to Roberts and Butts, these "channelled" books were published verbatim with only minor editorial corrections.
1972 - 1974 - They were tape recorded, and have been transcribed and published in a series of books, notably Seth Speaks; The Eternal Validity of the Soul and The Nature of Personal Reality: A Seth Book.
1975 - In her autobiographical work Adventures in Consciousness: An Introduction to Aspect Psychology, Roberts gives the background and development of the "Seth" communications and discusses what she calls "aspect psychology," based on the concept that human consciousness is mobile.
1976 - An early book by Roberts titled How to Develop Your ESP Power was reissued under the title The Coming of Seth. It describes the day-to-day emergence of the personality of "Seth" and the experiments involved, with suggestions for experiments that readers can attempt.
1977 - 1979 - Other "Seth" books include: The "Unknown" Reality, and The Nature of the Psyche; Its Human Expression.
1981 - It was supplemented by The God of Jane; A Psychic Manifesto, discussing her early life, psychic experiences, and outlook and The Individual and the Nature of Mass Events. Some of the "Seth" titles have been reprinted by Bantam in paperback.
1984 - She died on the 5th of September, in her home town, Elmira, New York. The Austin Seth Center was formed to spread the ideas of the "Seth" Material; it also publishes the quarterly magazine Reality Change.
