1918 - Born on October 11th in New York City. Was one of the most popular and imaginative American choreographers of the 20th century. Robbins was first known for his skillful use of contemporary American themes in ballets and Broadway and Hollywood musicals.

1940 - He joined Ballet Theatre (later American Ballet Theatre).

1944-1953 - Choreographed ballets "Fancy Free", "Interplay", "Facsimile", Broadway musicals "On the Town", "Call Me Madam", "The King and I" and "The Pajama Game".

         - Robbins was called before the House Un-American Activities Committee.

1957-1961 - Directed and choreographed Broadway musicals "West Side Story", "Gypsy" and "Fiddler on the Roof".

1962 - Received an Oscar for Best Director for West Side Story with Robert Wise.

1983 - The co-artistic director of New York City Ballet.

1988 - Recipient of the National Medal of Arts.

1989 - Won five Tony Awards: as Best Choreographer, for "High Button Shoes" and for "West Side Story;" as both Best Director (Musical) and Best Choreographer, for "Fiddler on the Roof;" and as Best Director (Musical) for "Jerome Robbins' Broadway."

1998 - Died of stroke on July 29th in New York City.
