1974 - He was the assistant conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.

         - He won the John Player Conductor Competition.

1980 - He became principal conductor with the CBSO, at the age of 25.

1990 - The music director of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

1998 - He toured in North America for the last time as Music Director in May.

1999 - Chosen to succeed Italian Claudio Abbado and has spent recent months helping the orchestra organise its perilous finances.

2002 - Sir Simon Rattle has begun his 10-year tenure as chief conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.

         - Making the Liverpool born-musician and former chief conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) the sixth chief conductor in the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra's 117-year history.
