1552 – He was born this year in the house of Hayes Barton, not far from Budleigh Salterton in Devon.
1568 - He was registered as an undergraduate at Oriel College, Oxford, but does not seem to have taken up residence.
1575 - He was registered at the Middle Temple.
1578 - He went on an expedition with Humphrey Gilbert against the Spanish.
1579 – He took part in the suppression of the Desmond Rebellions.
1581 - He came back to England from Ireland with dispatches as his company had been disbanded.
1588 - He was mayor from this year up to 1589.
1589 - He attempted a second expedition again establishing a settlement on Roanoke Island.
1590 - He traveled from Ireland to the court at London.
1602 - He sold the lands to Richard Boyle, 1st Earl of Cork
1587 - He attempted a second expedition again establishing a settlement on Roanoke Island.
1592 – He was given many rewards by the Queen, including Durham House in the Strand and the estate of Sherborne, Dorset.
1591 - He was secretly married to Elizabeth ("Bess") Throckmorton (or Throgmorton).
1594 - He explored South America in search of Manoa, the golden city.
1596 - He took part in the capture of Cadiz.
1597 - He also participated in a voyage to the Azores.
1600 - He was the Governor of the Channel Island of Jersey, and he was responsible for modernizing the defenses of the island.
1603 - He was imprisoned in the Tower of London on the 19th of July this year.
1616 - He was released from the Tower of London in order to conduct a second expedition to the Orinoco River in South America, in search of El Dorado.
1618 – He died on the 29th day of October this year.
