1920 - Mario Gianluigi Puzo or Mario Puzo, born on the 15th of October in New York, USA. He was born into an immigrant family, the son of a railway trackman. The discovery of public libraries, and the world of literature, led Puzo in the direction of writing.

1946 - He married Erika Broske, and the couple had five children.

1950 - His first published story, 'The Last Christmas', appeared in American Vanguard

1955 - His first book, 'Dark Arena', appeared.

1963 - He worked as a freelance journalist and writer. He wrote for men's magazines, and published book reviews, stories, and articles.

1965 - He published 'Fortunate Pilgrim', which followed a family of Italian immigrants through the 20th-century.

1969 - His breakthrough came, with 'Godfather', his novel about the mafia, corruption, violence, and honour. The novel stayed on US best-seller lists for sixty-seven weeks.

1974 - He wrote the first draft of the script for the disaster film, Earthquake, which he was unable to continue working on, due to his commitment to "The Godfather: Part II."

1999 - Died from heart failure on the 2nd of July at his home in Bay Shore, Long Island, New York.
