1871 - Valentin Louis Georges Eugène Marcel Proust, born on the 10th of July in Auteuil, NC France, of Jewish descent. He was a French intellectual, novelist, essayist and critic.
1905 - He was already at work on translating Ruskin's Sesame and Lilies, which he completed in June.
1912 - He then devoted himself to writing, and produced the first part of what was to be the greatest novel of the 20th-century.
1913 - His 13-volume masterpiece, A la recherche du temps perdu (trans Remembrance of Things Past), published at his own expense.
1919 - The second volume of this work, delayed by World War 1, won the Prix Goncourt.
1922 - He died on the 18th of November and is buried in the Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
