1664 - Born on the 21st of July.

1686 - He took his B.A. degree, and two years later became a fellow.

1687 - He wrote the City Mouse and Country Mouse, in ridicule of John Dryden's The Hind and the Panther.

1697 - He was secretary to the plenipotentiaries who concluded the Peace of Ryswick.

1695 - His occasional poems during this period include an elegy on Queen Mary.

1701 - He sat in Parliament for East Grinstead.

1709 - He had already published a collection of verse.

1715 - He was impeached by Robert Walpole and kept in close custody for two years.

1721 - Died on the 18th of September.
