1909- Born in Woodville, Miss.; birth of the developer of bebop

-The tenor saxophone jazz musician

 

1930s-40s -He played with many of the most influential bands, including those of Fletcher Henderson and Count Basie.

 

1950s -was a leading figure in the emergence of the "cool" jazz.

-His recordings with Billie Holiday quickly attained the status of jazz greats as Oscar Peterson and Teddy Wilson

-Young lighter, more suave approach to the tenor sax was a departure from the conventional, heavily sensuous sax sound, and his style influenced the playing of later saxophonist Charlie Parker.
